1982年、高橋幸宏のプロデュースによりアルバム『H』にてソロデビュー。1983年、アルバム『Hm』をリリース。その後1984年には『テッキー君とキップルちゃん』、1985年『太陽さん』をリリース。1987年には映画『ラスト・エンペラー』に通訳役で出演し、銀幕デビューを飾る。同時にグラフィック・デザイナーとしても活動し、1991年には第35回ADC最高賞を受賞。同年アルバム『BAMBI』をリリース。1992年には個展「タイポグラフィー」を開催し、画集『タイポグラフィー』をリリース。1993年には展覧会『立花ハジメとDEPT.』展開催。1995年にはMacintosh用グラフィックソフト「イラストレーター」のプラグイン・モジュール「信用ベータ」をリリースし、四谷P3にて個展『アプリケーションツアー』を開催すると同時に画集『アプリケーションツアー』をリリース。1997年にはロック・バンドLow Powersを結成し、アルバム『Low Powers』をリリース。1998年、恵比寿P-Houseにて『リトグラフと活版印刷とプリントアウトと立花ハジメとP-Houseと』を開催。

2002年、プログラミングのグループ展「TENDJAVa」に参加し、アルバム『The END』をリリース。2007年、紺野千春、屋敷豪太、杉本クニらとともにロック・バンドTHE CHILLを結成、アルバムをリリース。2013年にはアルバム『モナコ Monaco」を完全限定USB版にてリリース。2019年、新バンドHm（ハーマイナー）を結成、各所でライヴ。

2021年、詩集『ORIGATO PLASTICO』で詩人デビュー。2026年、新宿BEAMS〈B GALLERY〉にて展覧会《古くて錆びた鉄 新しくモダンな未来》、そして写真家・小暮徹氏による1976年のプラスチックス写真の展示《PLASTICS 1976 by TOHRU KOGURE》を開催。8月、13年振りのニューアルバム『dad bb』、12インチシングル「ZOUNDS!」をリリース。代官山UNITにてLow Powersの解散コンサートを開催。

Hajime Tachibana
Born in Tokyo in 1951. In 1974, he joined the graphic design group “Workshop MU!!.” In 1973, he traveled to the UK, following David Bowie who had come to Japan. In 1976, he formed Plastics together with Toshinori Nakanishi and Chica Sato. The lineup later changed, with Takemi Shima and Masahide Sakuma joining. In 1979, their first single “COPY / ROBOT” was released by Rough Trade in the UK, launching their debut on the world stage. In 1980, they made their major-label debut with the release of their first album, Welcome Plastics, on Victor. From 1980 they toured worldwide, including throughout the US and Europe. In 1981, the album WELCOME BACK was released worldwide on Island Records, but Plastics disbanded that same year.

In 1982, he made his solo debut with the album H, produced by Yukihiro Takahashi. In 1983, he released the album Hm. He went on to release Tekkie-kun to Kipple-chan in 1984 and Taiyō-san in 1985. In 1987, he made his screen debut, appearing as an interpreter in the film The Last Emperor. He was also active as a graphic designer during this time, winning the 35th ADC Grand Prize in 1991. That same year, he released the album BAMBI. In 1992, he held the solo exhibition “Typography” and released an accompanying art book of the same name. In 1993, the exhibition “Hajime Tachibana and DEPT.” was held. In 1995, he released “Shin-yō Beta,” a plug-in module for the Macintosh graphics software Illustrator, and held the solo exhibition “Application Tour” at P3 in Yotsuya, releasing an accompanying art book of the same name. In 1997, he formed the rock band Low Powers and released the album Low Powers. In 1998, he held “Lithographs, Letterpress, Printouts, Hajime Tachibana, and P-House” at P-House in Ebisu.

In 2002, he took part in the programming group exhibition “TENDJAVa” and released the album The END. In 2007, he formed the rock band THE CHILL together with Chiharu Konno, Gota Yashiki, and Kuni Sugimoto, and released an album. In 2013, he released the album Monaco in a strictly limited USB edition. In 2019, he formed the new band Hm (H-minor), performing live at various venues.

In 2021, he made his debut as a poet with the poetry collection ORIGATO PLASTICO. In 2026, he held the exhibition “Old Rusted Iron, New Modern Future” at B GALLERY in BEAMS Shinjuku, alongside “PLASTICS 1976 by TOHRU KOGURE,” an exhibition of 1976 photographs of Plastics by photographer Tohru Kogure. In August, he released his first new album in 13 years, dad bb, along with the 12-inch single “ZOUNDS!,” and held Low Powers’ farewell concert at UNIT in Daikanyama.
